2 Very Fine+ Vintage Halloween Black Cat Diecut Decorations, East Germany 1940s For Sale
Welcome Fellow Vintage and Antique
Hallowe'en and Paper Ephemera Enthusiasts!
Many of you know us as longtime collectors and sellers of vintage and
antique Hallowe'en, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter memorabilia, antique
dolls, old toys, and lovely old china and glassware.
For your all-year-long Hallowe’en loving pleasure we are HAUNTINGly happy to
present two PURRRRfectly wonderful large black cat diecut decorations that were
made in the 1940s and these two FRIGHTfully fabulous felines hail from our
Please meet Percy and Penelope. They were the slightly later iterations of
these German diecuts, made in the 1940s since they have their circular “Made in
USSR Occupied Germany” stamps. Bothpieces are also embossed Germany.
The colors used for these two SPOOKtacular decorations are unusual and just
magnificent, including old brownish-orange, black, golden tan and metallic
golden bronze was used for their eyes. They are large, measuring 19 ½” high x 8”
They were both made from thick, heavily-embossed cardboard or pressed paper
pulp and they are in outstanding condition for their age. Percy stands casually
posed with hands in pockets and wears a fabulous costume with jaunty bowtie and
dapper hat. He even has a feather in his cap! His pants are decorated with many
six-pointed stars and the band of his hat is also decorated with stars and a
crescent moon. His longtime companion, Penelope, stands coyly with paws behind
her back. She has matching six-pointed stars on her dress.
Two just like these can be seen on page 155 of Mark B. Ledenbach’s outstanding
book “Vintage Halloween Collectibles; An Identification & Price Guide
(Second Edition)”. Mark’s are the slightly earlier version made from 1920 through
The exact condition is as follows: neither piece has any wear to the hanging
hole placed by the manufacturers at the top of each diecut. Percy retains his
cardboard easel on the back, which makes him a stand-up. He has a little
crackling to the black paint which is commensurate with his age. Please see
photos. On the reverse there is some indication that tape was used and this has
created an area of surface lifts at his hat. This is reverse-side only! The
metallic paint used for his eyes is in excellent condition, with only a few
small rubs. So often, when metallic paint was used, it is the first area to
show wear. However, both of these kitties have stunning golden eyes. Penelope
has no easel. Again, tape was used on her reverse and a shadow remains there.
This appears at the very top and at the very bottom of her paws on the reverse.
There is a paint rub to her tail and only a tiny bit of crackling to her black
paint at her tail – but this particular example is in amazing condition.
This is an opportunity for you to own two incredible pieces of Hallowe'en history!
We think that this pair, in their WICKEDly wonderful condition and with their
charming and endearing expressions, would make an outstanding addition to any
collection of Hallowe'en memorabilia and ephemera.

Oh, there’ll be spooky doings
When cometh Hallowe'en,
With black cats loudly meowing,
And witches to be seen;
For ‘tis the night when bats careen,
And hoots the hooting owl,
While in the heavy shadows
The gray ghost slyly prowl.
Happy Hallowe'en 2013!
