Here are two antique JAPANNED frames with cabinet photos inside. I refer to the style of JapannedJapanningwhichis most often a heavy black lacquer, almost likeenamel paint. Black is common enough that japanning is often assumed to be synonymous with black japanning. The European technique uses varnishes that have a resin base, similar toshellac, applied in heat-dried layers which are then polished, to give a smooth glossy finish. It can also come in reds, greens and blues.Originating in India, China and Japan as a decorative coating for pottery, it made its way into Europe by the 17th century. In the late 17th century, high European demand andrumorsthat higher quality pieces were not exported led to production starting inItaly. Its traditional form used gold designs and pictorials to contrast with the black base color. Was also used for a finish on furniture and wood.
The frames can be used for your own family photos or keep these vintage pictures. Each frame has a good hanger and there is glass over each picture or photo and the approximate size is 9 x 7 on the exterior measurement and the interior measurement of where the photo is measures about 6 x 4 inches. Hard to find with great glossy finish and delicatepaintedgold designs.
