John Tyler was the 10th President and a native of Virginia. In the 1820s the Democratic-
Republicans were the nation\'s only political party during a time of political upheaval. This forced
the Democratic-Republicans to split into factions. Tyler initially joined the Democrat faction with
his strict constructionist ideals. But his opposition to Andrew Jackson and Martin VanBuren led
him to an alliance with the Whig Party. In 1840 the Whig Party chose John Tyler to run as Vice
President with William Henry Harrison. Both ran under the famous slogan of “Tippeecanoe and
Tyler too” coined from the command of Harrison in the Indian battle of Tippeecanoe in 1811.
Only a month after his inauguration Harrison died to cause a short Constitutional crisis
over the succession process. Tyler immediately moved into the White House,
took the oath of office and assumed full presidential powers. Tyler in fact became
the first to succeed to the office of the President after his death. He set a precedent that
would govern future successions and eventually be codified in the Twenty-Fifth Amendment.
Tyler as the new President opposed the Whig platform and vetoed several of their proposals.
His opposition to federalism and emphatic support of \"States\' Rights\" endeared him to his
fellow Virginians but alienated him from most of his political allies. The convictions of Tyler
crippled his Presidency from opposition of both the Whig Party and Democrat Party.
As a result most of his cabinet resigned and the Whigs expelled him from their party
dubbing him “His Accidency”. Since Tyler faced a stalemate on domestic policy
he focused more on foreign policy. He achieved several accomplishments including the
Webster-Ashburton Treaty with Britain and the Treaty with Wanghia with Qing China. Tyler
actually desired and hoped for reelection to a second full term.  He tried without success to form a
NEW party but the earlier alienation of the parties sealed his fate. Tyler then dedicated
his last two years in office mainly to the annexation of Texas. In the last days of his term,
Congress passed the resolution authorizing annexation. But his successor, James K. Polk,
received credit and actually carried out the annexation. After his presidency was over
Tyler essentially retired from electoral politics until the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861.
He sided with the Confederate government, and won election to the
Confederate House of Representatives shortly before his death. Although some have praised
Tyler\'s political resolve, his presidency is generally held in low esteem by historians.
