to become the 14thPresident. Although Pierce was popularand charismatic,

his support of slaveryand his diverse opinionated cabinet made him a most ineffective President.

His continued support of slavery in the Missouri Compromiseand in the Kansas-Nebraska Act

actually also made himquite unpopular with democrats from the Northern States

who refused to nominatehim for a 2nd term. FranklinPierce and his wife Jane

known as the “Shadow ofthe White House” also suffered personal tragedy and deep depression

by the death of all 3 oftheir sons before he was President.Their last son died in

a train accident just 2months before Franklin Pierce was inaugurated as President in 1852.
