2nd Regiment of Chasseurs French Infantry 21mm coat button by \"T.W.&W. Paris\" :

This 21mm coat size button was made for an elite French infantry unit of Chasseurs, if memory serves me correctly. Only the \"best of the best\" served in these types of units, sort of like Army Rangers compared to a regular line-infantry unit in the modern U.S. Army. Chasseur units served with distinction in the Crimean War of 1854-1856 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. They conducted special missions, served as skirmishers, plugged holes in the lines at critical moments, served as guards at General Officer Headquarters level, served as cadre for new recruits, etc. This button has lots of age patina to its silvered front and back. This manufacturer is the same firm that made buttons for the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War, \"Trelon, Weldon and Wiel\" of Paris, France, between 1844 and 1865. Buttons made for the CSA by T.W. & W. during the Civil War would have been run through the blockade. I have the impression that this same button has at times been sold as a rare Louisiana button of the Confederacy due to the Civil War back-mark on this button. I feel very confident it stating it was not a button run through the blockade for the 2nd Louisiana Sharpshooters or some other fictitious unit (hope I\'m not stepping on toes). As you can see, they did a stellar job designing and manufacturing this button.
