History of America, From Its Discovery by Columbus to the Conclusion of the Late War. With An Appendix, Containing An Account of the Rise and Progress of the Present unhappy Contest Between Great Britain and Her Colonies. Russell, William. London: Fielding and Walker, 1778. Vols I & II, Complete Set.Two volumes in a complete set, in matching morocco [raised gilt bands, with partial title labels to the spine]. Leather with rubbing and wear, with some splitting to the spine leather. Front board detached on vol II, vol I front board split at the joint but held by cords. Sadly, these books are lacking all maps and plates. Nevertheless, a beautiful, attractive and nearly complete set of this significant work. iv, 596; 629, [3] pp. lacking only the final page of text in Vol I. Pages with some light soiling and browning, all intact and unmarked. Vol II with curious signature crossed out at top right of the title page, the first line reading \'Major Church,\' but the second undecipehrable. This could refer to one of 6 men who were at the rank of Major in the Revolution, listed below. Great potential ownership!Volume I is largely devoted to Latin America, and the second to North America. The \"late war\" of the title is actually the French and Indian War, which ended in 1763. However, the work was updated before publication with a lengthy \"Appendix to the History of America.\" A comprehensive history of America for the time, issued in the midst of the American Revolution, covering the period from the conquest through the settlement and division of America. It is likely that the book was inspired by the war, and the second half of the second volume is devoted to events from the French and Indian War up to the American treaty with France in February, 1778. The Revolution was viewed as a struggle to determine \"whether France or Great Britain shall give law to America.\" There is also an overall pro-British tone to the explanations of the War, with favor and hope driven towards the eventual losers of the conflict against the American \'rebels.\' An extremely valuable set, even lacking the illustrations and maps. Each volume measures 10.5\" x 8.5\" x 2.5\". Good luck!
