Theinaugurationmarked the commencement of the first four-year term ofGrover Clevelandas President and the only term ofThomas A. HendricksasVice President. Hendricks died 266 days into this term, and the office remained vacant for the balance of it. (Prior toratificationof theTwenty-fifth Amendmentin 1967, no constitutional provision existed for filling an intra-term vacancy in the vice presidency.)

Chief JusticeMorrison R. Waiteadministered thepresidential oath of office, and Cleveland held a Bible given to him at age 15 by his mother as he recited it. Cleveland\'ssecond inaugurationtook place eight years after the first, as his two terms in office were not consecutive. He is the only U.S. president to serve non-consecutive terms.[1]
