We are selling a 3/4 groove axe. This is an old museum piece with label still attached, numbers are written in fountain pen w/old script. This axe came from the estate of George Eastman\'s (founder of Kodak) doctor, Dr. Audley Durand Stewart. Dr. Stewart traveled with Mr. Eastman on several adventures, including a 7-month safari and big game hunt in 1926. Dr. Stewart brought a cheetah home from that trip for his children to keep as a pet, and eventually the cat escaped from his house and terrorized the streets of Rochester until it was captured and put in a zoo.Dr. Stewart was a hunter, explorer and adventurer in his own right, and his house was full of artifacts not only from foreign countries, but also from his trips around the United States. I\'m not sure where this axe originated, but it looks similar to the ones I\'ve seen out of Illinois. It\'s made of hardstone and has an interesting worm track. What I find so remarkable about this axe is that it has incredible hand fit with the perfect indentation created for the index finger and bracing spot for the thumb on the poll. When you hold it, there is no question that it was used by a right-handed person and was a very effective tool. I believe that although this axe may have had a haft at one time, it was also used as a hand tool.If you are an expert willing to share info, I\'d love to hear your thoughts. I am fascinated by this object and only know what I have studied for myself in the past couple weeks.Measures about 5\" long, 3 1/4\" wide, 2 1/4\' tall. Weight is 1 lb 12 oz. It is 100% guaranteed to be an authentic artifact.
