Complementing the picturesare more of the lively reminiscences that made Jim\'s earlier books so popular.

FROM THE COVER === Written with the warmth, humour, and keen eye for west coast character that made a nonstop bestseller of Spilsbury\'s Coast, this book tells the incredible story of how an itinerant radio repairman accidentally started Queen Charlotte Airlines, Canada\'s largest bush flying outfit.

Affectionately know as \"Queer Collection of Aircraft,\" by the stakey loggers, pregnant homesteaders and touring 1950s movie stars who rode its ungainly \"Flying Boxcars\" through the rain and fog, QCA beat out the competition to reign for one glorious decade as the queen of the booming post-war coast.

\"We had everything happen to us,\" QCA founder Jim Spilsbury says of that remarkable era, \"Everything.\"

Gruesome accidents, hairsbreadth escapes, high-stakes air wars, bed-hopping pilots and mercy flights beyond counting --

there\'s never been an airline quite like QCA and there\'s never been a flying story quite like The Accidental Airline.

Comments on Spilsbury\'s Coast, by Howard White and Jim Spilsbury:

\"Here is storytelling at its very best.\" == Dan Dunaway, Coast Mountain Courier

\"It\'s history, it\'s comedy, it\'s a whole new look at the rags-to-riches story. And it\'s essential reading for those who would fathom what makes lotus land tick.\" == Tony Eberts, Vancouver Province

INSCRIBED & SIGNED BY AUTHOR \" To Howie with best wishes - Jim Spilsbury\"

FROM THE COVER === This book is the story of a fabulous place — the British Columbia coast — and a man whose remarkable life it shaped—Jim Spilsbury.

Spilsbury\'s coast is that part of the Inside Passage between the Fraser River and the top end of Vancouver Island, one of the biggest, most intricate inland seas on the globe. It is a place of small boats and countless islands and whole towns on floats at the edge of the world.

The son of a rebellious, trouser-wearing suffragette and a Cambridge-educated gentleman, Jim Spilsbury spent ten of his early years living in a tent on the beach at Savary Island, a hundred miles of wilderness from Vancouver.

The island\'s one-room school only went to fourth reader but Spilsbury learned enough on his own to become one of the west coast\'s early wizards of radio. Starting out in business as a radio repairman calling on upcoast logging camps in a leaky cod boat, he went on to become Canada\'s largest exporter of radio-telephone equipment and almost accidentally started what has since grown into Canada\'s largest domestic airline.

But the way Spilsbury tells his story, these achievements were just minor diversions on his unending voyage of discovery up and down the BC coast, which he carries on in his eighties with undiminished fascination. It\'s the years between the wars he likes to remember, the years when he lived and travelled among a community of \"loggers, fishermen, stump ranchers, hermits, remittance men, Greek scholars, ex-prostitutes, former stagecoach robbers, and outright lunatics,\" which he says \"surely must have been unique in the history of the world.\"

Starting his coastal odyssey in 1914, he saw that community come and go, leaving only memories behind.

But such memories!

MORE ABOUT THE AUTHORS = A.J. (JIM) SPILSBURY was born in Findern, Derbyshire in 1905 but came to the BC coast in his infancy and remained there all his life. He graduated from Savary Island School in 1918 and earned his L.D.E. at Theodosia in 1922. He began manufacturing small radios in the early 1920\'s and in 1941 founded Spilsbury and Hepburn Ltd., later Spilsbury and Tindall Ltd., which became one of Canada\'s best known radio-telephone manufacturers. In 1943 Mr. Spilsbury founded Queen Charlotte Airlines, which was already Canada\'s third largest air carrier when it was merged with Pacific Western Airlines in 1955. Mr. Spilsbury is also an artist whose pastels are renowned for their interpretation of coastal landscape.

The Queen Charlotte Airlines was a Canadian airline founded by Jim Spilsbury that operated on the West Coast of Canada from 1943 to 1955, when it was sold to Pacific Western Airlines. Though the airline began as bush flying operation, it grew to become the third largest airline in Canada at the time of its sale.

The book The Accidental Airline, by Jim Spilsbury and Howard White, tells the story of the QCA.
