This is a signedhandwritten letter by author James Appleton Morgan.


The letter is handwritten on a 7\" by 8.5\" sheet of

his office stationery,with his name printed twice.


The address is 30 Park Place, New York,which

is now the site of a new 82 story skyscraper.


Thisskyscraper, alsoknown as the Four Seasons

Hotel, is located in downtown Manhattan,close to

the World Trade Center.





James Appleton Morgan (1845-1928) was a

New Yorkattorney withliterary interests, who

founded the Shakespeare Society in 1885.Morgan

served as the president of that organization until 1910.


Morgan was the author of many literary books

and essays, includingThe Shakespearean Myth;

The Law of Literature; Macaronic Poetry;and

Venus and Adonis: a Study in Warwickshire Dialect.


Morgan was also the author of many books and essays

on the Law,such as The Principles of the Law of Evidence.





The letter is dated June 1, 1877.

It is addressed toa \"Mr. Gilbert\".


As best I can make out, it reads as follows:




Mr. Gilbert,


Dear Sir- will you let this matter

lie over a day or so- my wife was

taken sick & I had to go into the country

with her & only returned late yes-

terday- I will let you hear from

me early in the week

(no doubt I have gotten a few words wrong)



There is some writing in faint ink on the reverse

side,probably by the unidentified Mr. Gilbert.


The letter is in good condition, with a spot wornthrough

nextto the salutation, and some generalwear.


It is enclosed ina clear plastic page, for protection.


The letter is an interesting relic of 19th century New York,

with a very nice connection to 21st century New York.
