Rooseveltto aJoint Session of Congresson 8 December 1941, one day after theEmpire of Japan\'sattackonPearl Harbor,Hawaii.[1][2][3][4][5]The name derives from the first line of the speech: Roosevelt describing the previous day as \"a date which will live in infamy\".

Within an hour of the speech,Congresspassed a formaldeclaration of war against Japanand officially brought theU.S.intoWorld War II. The address is regarded as one of the most famous American political speeches of the 20th century.
