One side of the beaker features the Imperial doubled-headed eagle and the reverse shows the Imperial cipher. The remainder of the body is decorated in polychrome with traditional Russian strap work with gilt highlights. 
The Cup of Sorrows or Khodynka Cup was produced to commemorate the coronation of Tsar Nicholas II on May 18 1896. The cup was to be distributed to waiting crowds at Khodinka Field the following day. However a rumour of a shortage of the cups lead to a mass panic and surge amongst the crowd which resulted in a significant loss of lives.
