Beautiful details in this 4-piece set, from the ribbon like curl of the spout to the balance of the hand engraving to the ground, to the higher standard silver.

In fact, it is the French, 1st standard, 950 not 925.


The tea set was designed by renowned 19thcentury silversmith, John R. Wendt (1826-1907).

Recognized as \"one of thebest designers and chasers in the art\", Wendt moved to New York in 1860 towork with the firm of Ball, Black & Co.

John Wendt is knownand collected for quality and elegant design. His work is in the permanentcollections of many museums including the

Smithsonian American Art Museum andBoston\'s Museum of Fine Art.

This Wendt 4-piecetea set consists of a measures: a 9.25\" teapot with hinged lid, a7.5\" sugar bowl with lid, a 7.375\" cream jug with hinged lid and a4.375\" waste bowl.

(All measurements are to the uppermost point.)

Waste bowlweighs 559 grams, and is 4-1/2 inches tall

Teapot—1056grams, 7-1/2 inches including swan

CoveredSugar—767 grams, 7-inches including swan

Creamer—462grams, 5 ¾ inches

2844 totalgrams or 91.45 troy ounces

A great deal of thesilver created in the 19th century was by commission and this setmay fall into that category. It featuresswan finials and hand engraved body decoration.

Because it is thoughtswans mate for life, the motif is particularly popular as weddingpresents.

Condition isexcellent antique, monogrammed with period letters. Thereis a linear impression in one of the hinged lids that may be a result of impactwith the edge of the handle,

or part of the design. It is short and can be seen in one of thephotos. There are also two very minor impressions on one lid as it curves away from the top, this too is featured in the photos.

Beading decorates therims and shoulders, wriggle-work borders and classic, hand engraved Wendtfloral medallion motif.

The oval body shapes are setwith angular handles.

Strongly gildedinterior in the waste bowl, this piece makes a great low vase for small floralcenterpieces that don’t inhibit conversation.

The underside of thepieces bear Wendt\'s shield hallmark which contains silver purity mark ‘950/1000’along with retailer stamp ‘BALL, BLACK & CO NEW YORK’.

Truly an exceptional mid-19thcentury set of high quality, French standard silver.
