IMPORTANT EARLY JAPANESE BRONZE IMPERIAL MUROMACHI VASE
RARE AND EXQUISITE QUALITY Muromachi Period (1336 - 1573)
Exquisite, very early Japanese bronze vase of exceptionally rare museum quality. Striking form, reminiscent of archaic Chinese ceremonial Gu produced during the Shang Dynasty. The body displays some of the very earliest Imperial Chrysanthemum symbols within spear shaped uprights, with the lower sections encircled by traditional temple guardian dogs, known in Japan as shishi. Each section divided by narrow vertical flanges. Very well cast withminute detail in the hundreds of swirling spirals.
The vase is both strong and harmonious in the traditional Japanese aesthetic and changes wonderfully under various lighting conditions. Bears a sublime patina from centuries of appreciation with minor wear commensurate with age. We note an old spot on the side that at some point developed a small hole (see photos 6, 7, 8), and the base is out of perfect round. Adds wonderful character to the 400+ year old aesthetic of the piece. Measures approximately 7 1/8\" high and 5 3/8\" wide. Most likelycommissioned for a Daimyo, wealthy samurai family, or Imperial household. A true masterpiece from the early days of the Shogun and Samurai, rarely seen on the open market. A sublime centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world-class Japanese antiques.
