Early Printing from the Decretales of Pope Gregory IX. Printed by Thielmann Kerver for Jean Petit and Jean Cabiller at Paris in 1505. Gregory IX was also known as Ugolino, Count of Segni. He was born about 1145, at Anagni in the Campagna and died 22 August, 1241, at Rome. Gregory promulgated the Decretals in 1234, a code of canon law that remained the fundamental source of ecclesiastical law for the Catholic Church until after World War I. His most notable achievement was the Canonization of Saint Francis of Assisi, on August 14, 1228. The quarto size leaves measure 220 x 165 mm. in totality and contains various lines of text surrounded by 67 lines of commentary printed in red and black ink.
