6 Antique Minton for Tiffany Pate-Sur-Pate Plates

Beautiful work by famed pâte-sur-pâte artist Albion Birks, Minton, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England. These are one of the most rare and sought after of Minton pâte-sur-pâte plates. Features three oval pâte-sur-pâte inserts of classical design: Venus (or a nymph) alone or with cherubs, set in blue ground. Heavily gilded raised-bead design: bows, swags, wreaths, and scrolling lotus and foliate fill up the space between the oval plaques, the outer rim is decorated a pattern of trellis punctuated with quartrefoil of foliate and laurel ornaments, the outside edge of the rim terminates in a raised beaded design, gilded foot rim.

On each plate: 1 Plaque signed \"A. Birks\" 2 Plaques signed \"AB\", for Albion Birks, the last Minton pate-sur-pate artist to apprentice under the legendary Louis Solon, Plates similar to these were shown in the Minton Museum (see Bonhams, \"Masterpieces of Minton\", July 23, 2002). Similar plates are also documented \"The Vine Pottery, Birks Rawlings and Co. Influences from Minton and Spode-Copeland\", pages 33 - 35, and a demitasse cup of the same design can be found on page 36. Also see page 212 of \"Minton the First 200 Years of Design and Production\" by Joan Jones for similar plates. Albion Birks has pieces in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, that can be seen on their website.
