Up for sale today are some wonderful sterling silver forks made in England in either the late 18th century or the early part of the 19th century. They are 6 3/4 inches long and weigh a total of 13.3 ounces (on my digital scale). English sterling up until 1890 had five marks: silver purity mark (walking lion for sterling), city mark, maker\'s mark, duty mark (a bust of the reigning monarch) & date mark. These forks do not have a city mark. Also hard to determine is the duty mark...it is very worn on all of the forks and hard to see which king it represented. I found that York was the one city that did not always use a city mark on sterling made there but the date letters for York do not look like the ones on the forks. The only makers mark I found that matched the ones on the forks was from York...William Vincent worked there in the last quarter of the 18th century. So, we have a mystery...18th or 19th century? York? I can definitely say they are sterling, were made in UK & are heavy. I used them occasionally and they feel wonderful in the hand. They are monogrammed on the back. Some of the designs on the forks have worn down over time but as you can see, the forks are still beautiful. The tines of the forks are not perfectly straight, are not uniform in length and have more than normal spaces between the tines on some of them. There are scratches and tiny nicks but nothing major; they are in pretty good condition for such old forks.Please see all photos.
