Description

These six eggs were made in Poland, and date to the 1980\'s, or early 1990\'s. In Poland they are known as Pisanka, but have more commonly have become called by the Ukrainian name, Psyanka, or Psyanky. There are new ones being made today that are painted over wood. The older ones, like these, are real eggs, painted with a wax Batik method, filled with clay (I know - I broke one so I could see what was inside!~). They are gorgeous, and backed by hundreds of years of traditions. I bought a lot of them, and had them shipped from Poland a LONG time ago. They are unused, but may have an occasional small flaw, in the form of a very tiny chip to the paint, although I will always try and mention any flaws that I see! The eggs vary in size, as they are real eggs, but are \"medium\" size - the size of medium eggs that you would buy in the grocery store. The yolks are blown out through a small hole, and they are filled with clay, and then decorated. You can see the holes on the end of the eggs.

This type of egg was made in Ukraine, Poland, Bulgaria, Hungary and all the Slavic countries. This type of egg is a folk tradition that like most folk traditions was adopted by early Christianity and given religious meanings to overlay the older traditions.

One of the legends concerns the Virgin Mary . It tells of the time a weeping Mary gave eggs to the soldiers at the cross, entreating them to be less cruel to her son. The tears of Mary fell on the eggs, spotting them with dots of brilliant color.

These six eggs are shades of green, with one yellow one. They have a few chips to the paint. I tried to show the flaws in the pictures. They are charming, and are wonderful pieces of folk art!
