This wonderful, limited edition, First Edition, out-of-print book is signed by the author. The book constitutes an excellent history of the 63rd Virginia Infantry, including a complete, detailed and comprehensive history of the command as well as biographical narratives of some of its leaders. The book includes wonderful maps, detailed descriptions of battles and campaigns, specifics of individual soldiers in the command, unit rosters and wonderful maps, illustrations and photographs.

The book contains a unit roster complete with the Civil War service details of each individual soldier.

The 63rd Virginia Infantry was organized primarily of men from six Southwestern Virginia counties,, Carroll, Grayson, Montgomery, Smyth, Washington and Wythe. These men were about evenly split between secessionist and Union men, although probably most opposed secession at first. Very few were slave owners, most being small farmers. They were, as a group, older than the men who enlisted in 1861. Many were family men; some had several children. Many of the men were loyal to the Southern cause once the secession die was cast, and served in the various local militia regiments. In fact, the 63rd was primarily organized from these militia regiments when Humphrey Marshall declared a state of emergency and called out the militia in March 1862.

The regiment was immediately pressed into service, without any real training. It took part in the obscure battle of Kelly’s Store. It sat out the summer of 1863 at Saltville, but soon joined the Army of Tennessee and the war began in earnest for these men. They were heroes at Chickamauga, scapegoats at Missionary Ridge, and the pranksters of the army during the winter spent at Dalton, Georgia. From May 1864 until Atlanta fell they had very few days of rest, fighting constantly at Resaca, New Hope Church, Cassville, Mt. Zion Church, Kennesaw Mountain, Marietta, Peach Tree Creek, Ezra Church and in the line during the siege of Atlanta. The 63rd also fought gallantly at Jonesboro, Georgia. The regiment accompanied General Hood on his march into hell in Tennessee, and covered the retreat. The men fought through South Carolina and into North Carolina and played a key role in one of the last confederate victories at Bentonville.

The 63rd fought hard and became an important element of the Army of Tennessee.
