This choice galena specimen has an attractive metallic silver-gray color, and has formed as large, sharp, cubic crystals. The surfaces of the crystals are complex and three-dimensional, with a dull metallic luster. This is a top quality galena crystal group from this historic locality, which closed in 1967. It is well-formed and large for the locality.

Here is a superb, very sharp, oversized twinned cubic crystal of GALENA (lead sulfide) from the Crawford Mine, Pitcher Field, Tri-State District, Ottawa County, Oklahoma. I acquired this piece at the Tucson Gem Rock and Mineral Show this year from a dealer who had purchased an old collection of this material, which included this very choice old specimen.
The Tri-State district was located in southwest Missouri, southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma. It produced lead and zinc ores for over 100 years, beginning in the 1850s and continuing until 1967, when the Picher, OK mines closed.

Galena is a common and popular mineral for rock hounds. Its characteristic cubes, distinctive cleavage and high density make it easy to identify and a favorite in high school geology labs. The structure of galena is identical to that of halite, NaCl. The two minerals have the same crystal shapes, symmetry and cleavage. Some galena may contain up to 1% silver in place of lead. The large volume of galena that is processed for lead produces enough silver as a by product to make galena the leading ore of silver.
