Voronej Voronezhcloth doll 1930s description

In the late 1920s and early 1930s aseries of wonderfully made all cloth stockinette dolls was made representingthe peoples of the newly formed Soviet Union (The USSR: The Union of SovietSocialist Republics -- what they abbreviated as CCCP in the Cyrillic alphabet.)

This interesting lady represents aregion in south west Russia called Voronezh.

This doll has her original tagthat says \"Voronej Made inUSSR\"stampedon the underskirt. She also has a paper tag stapled in front that says 1939.

These dolls are extremely itoday, but they are often only found in pretty tough shape.

This doll and others from thisseries are shown on page 131 in \"European Costumed Dolls: Identificationand Price Guide\" by Polly and Pam Judd. (see picture below) They suggested a value of $100-$125in 1994.

Other dolls of the series are shownin several other doll collector books, such as onpage 209 of \"The How-To Book ofInternational Dolls: A Comprehensive Guide to Making, Costuming and CollectingDolls\" by Loretta Holz.

Another doll from the same series isshown on page 50 of \"Cloth Dolls from Ancient to Modern: A Collector\'sGuide with Values\" by Linda Edward, and she is in other books as well.(see pictures below)

Manyof the dolls of this series (including this one) are also shown at thefollowing website (see pic):

Costume Description:

She has a long cream-colored dresswhich she blouses out at the waist over her wrap-around striped overskirt.

The dress is made completely fromrectangular cuts of cloth ... no wasting fabric on cut-out arm pits, etc. (Ifyou had to spin, weave and sew your own clothing you\'d probably look for waysto not waste any as well! )

This is a typical dress constructionin other regions of Russia and other Eastern European countries, especially in Bulgariaand the former Yugoslavia (e.g. Serbia, Macedonia) in the Balkans.

The red rectangular pieces at thetop of the rectangles that make her sleeves are gathered on top to createmoveablity and fullness, plus a nice big splash of color.

Her interesting hat also hasrectangular and trapezoidal pieces sewn together and stretched over a base ofcardboard for a very distinctive look. It is held on by an attached red scarfaround the face that ties in back.

She has cotton undies. Herlegs are wrapped in cloth strips and held in place by her shoes thathave cords that wrap up around her legs.

The shoes themselves are wonderfulreal woven reed shoes popular in peasant classes in the region and around muchof Russia. They are called \"Lapti\" and they are often found prettybeat up. But this girl’s are great.

Doll Description:

She is 7 inches tall ... 8 inchestall with her distinctive hat.

Her face is silk stockinette(stockinet) stretched over a molded papier mache face. It is painted with greatskill and character, and I have collected many dolls from this series becauseof their extraordinary charming facial expressions. This one is a duplicate in my collection.

Her eyes are blue. Her arms and legsare cloth over wire armature. The body is well stuffed. She can be stand or be made to sit. .

Her hands are simple mitts ofstockinette-covered rounded wire. The hands are often damage fromrusting of the wire loop underneath the stockinet. This doll’s hands are NOTdamaged in this way.

She displays very nicely.

She is in excellent vintage condition.

Minimal fading. Minor darkening of the stockinette on her hands and neck. Nice and clean. No rips, tears or holes. There are no ickysmells! Non-smoking household.

History:

She is from a collection of 15 dolls(that I know of) representing the various Soviet Socialist Republics. I have a pictureof my collection of them from several years ago. The collection is bigger but I haven\'t taken a new picture that shows them well. Several are also listed today.

Thedolls in this series represent Ukraine, Voronej, Velikorusska, Belarus,Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kirguizstan, Samoyed, Roma, Tajikistan, a Russian\"Winter girl\" and a Russian \"Sky girl\" (I think itrepresents a \"ski\" girl.)

Thereis also another set of six dolls from this period representing some charactersthat are just Russian: Peasant Boy, Girl with a Shawl, Mordva Woman, Riazangirl, Mascha, and Peasant Girl on the Road. (This group is also shown ... I amlisting some of them as well this week.)

Also listed are some 14\" stockinette Soviet Union costumed dolls of the 20s-30s and a collection of tea cozies from the same period.

Shippingis free in the US. I will ship to anywhere in the world but otherinternational shipping will need to be determined individually.

Iwill happily combine shipping . . . please see my other sales. I will beoffering some other very high quality ethnic / foreign / national / native /cultural / regional folk costumed dolls.
