Antique Cast Iron Porcelain New York City Subway Hanger Strap Mounted on WoodBoardUp for offer is this vintage New York City NYC Porcelain/cast iron StrapHanger Handle mechanism. I believe that the porcelain design replaced the olderleather straps for durability and hygienic reasons as they were easier toclean. This hanger was bolted to the ceiling of the NYC subway car so standingriders would have something to hold onto when the car was in motion. Presumablythe spring action retracted the handle upward and out of the way of exitingand/or boarding passengersThe cast iron body is embossed RICOTYPE 16-A PATENTED. Also, there is the number2816 embossed on the bottom side of the casthandle. The unit is mounted on a wooden (pine) board for display and can bewall-mounted via two brass screws included (note that plastic anchors areneeded if mounting to plaster or sheetrock walls).A brass plaque is affixed at thebottom and reads:“STRAPHANGER”FromOLD NEW YORK SUBWAY CARSVery Nice Used Condition – no chips but there are some small scratches onthe porcelain and the adjustment screw slot is damaged but can be repaired orreplaced..
