84-piece STERLING SILVER QUEEN’S PATTERN CANTEEN, London1837 to 1910

84 piece CanteenQueen’s Pattern (12 place settings) - Hallmark: London 1829 -1910 , by mixedmakers – Weight: 4460 grams (143.4 tr.oz.) + 24 silver handled knives

The Service

This is an excellent 84 piece silver flatwareand cutlery service supplies seven pieces for each of the 12 place settings. This canteen is in the highly sought after Queen’s Pattern. The service iscomposed from pieces made by a variety of makers at different dates through theVictorian and Edwardian periods.

The majority of theflatware (spoons and forks) date from the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901),however there are a few slightly earlier pieces with the oldest dating from1829 and a few slightly later.

All the flatware washand-wrought in the traditional fashion of the London silversmiths and hasdouble-struck decoration in high relief. They are well matched in terms oflength and proportions and would look beautiful on any dining table.

Antique knives rarely survivein good order, so the standard practice is to use modern Sheffield made kniveswith stainless steel blades as practicable accompaniments: this is the casewith this service where all the dessert knives date from 1990 and the tableknives from 2003.

This canteen benefitsfrom bearing neither engraved initials nor crests. Most of the pieces have beenprofessionally erased of any old engravings - these are well done and not easyto spot.

Queen\'sPattern

Queen’s Pattern was first infashion in the 1820’s and was named in honour of Queen Caroline of Brunswick(King George IV’s wife). The highly ornate decoration found on Queens Patterndemands that each piece is made with a thick gauge of silver and thus makes itone of the most prestigious flatware patterns. It is generally found withengraved crests or initials to the front terminals, so a set that does not bearthese engravings is a bonus.

We have a huge range ofQueen’s Pattern in stock and will be happy to quote for any additional piecesthat may be required to suit your needs. We can augment the size of the serviceor supply appropriate serving pieces.

Condition

Excellent polishedcondition. The bowls are unworn and the tines are full and equal in length. Thedouble struck decoration remains crisp.

For a London made Queen’sPattern service, this canteen is extremely good value, this is because many ofthe pieces have been professionally erased of previous engravings to thecartouche on the front terminal with subsequent minor wear to the surroundingdecoration. This can be seen as a positive or negative dependent upon your ownthoughts as to the presence of engravings. Finding London-made QueensPattern in original condition without engravings is very difficult.

Presentation

This canteen is supplied in newnavy blue anti-tarnish cutlery rolls. Each roll has individual pockets to hold12 items per roll.
