Professor Charles Porterfield is a founding member of the Association of Independent Readers and Rootworkers, and a member of the Missionary Independent Spiritual Church, as well as Hoodoo Psychics. He has presented at MISC\'s annual Hoodoo Heritage Festival and has had his work published in The Black Folder: Personal Communications on the Mastery of Hoodoo. He is also the author of A Deck of Spells: Hoodoo Playing Card Magic in Rootwork and Conjure about the history and use of playing cards for divination and in conjure and rootwork, as well as the co-author of Hoodoo Bible Magic: Sacred Secrets of Spiritual Sorcery, a treatise on Bibliomancy and the use of the Holy Scriptures and the Psalms in hoodoo and conjure. He writes, teaches, and lectures on hoodoo, conjure, and Judaism to help preserve and pass on the roots of our work. Originally from Boyd, Texas, he currently lives in Denton, Texas, where it is his honour and privilege to offer consultative, prescriptional, and divinational work through hoodoo and conjure.

A \'Redback\', Professor Porterfield is a native Texan. Raised by his grandparents in the small town of Boyd, he grew up among the cottonwoods and Indian paintbrushes of North Texas. At an early age his grandparents decided that it was best for him to learn and experience the ways of their neighbours and friends, and so he was brought up in both the white Southern Baptist church and the black Pentecostal church. Leaving home at 15 in the back of a pickup truck, he set out on his own. He has worked as a cook, a day labourer, a printer\'s devil, a Montessori teacher, and, of course, a spiritual worker. He has been blessed to be both a father and a grandfather. Originally a member of the Hasidic branch of Orthodox Judaism, he is an observant Jew and student of the Torah, Talmud, and Zohar.
