Description:

STRAIGHT FROM AN OLD CONNECTICUT COLLECTION. THIS GREAT CHAIR WAS PURCHASED FROM LILLIAN COGAN, THE "QUEEN OF HEARTS AND CROWNS" BACK IN THE 1970'S.

HEART AND CROWN BANNISTER BACK ARMCHAIRS RARELY COME ONTO THE OPEN MARKET. WE HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO PURCHASE A COUPLE OF FINE EXAMPLES.

THESE ARE ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED AND COLLECTED EARLY CHAIRS AROUND.

AN EXTREMELY RAREWILLIAM AND MARY CONNECTICUT "HEART AND CROWN" DECORATED BANNISTER BACK ARMCHAIR, Circa 1740-1760 in A LATER EARLY 20TH CENTURY BLACK PAINTED SURFACE, probably made by the SALMON Family of Cabinetmakers, from Stratford, CT in wonderful condition.

A first period 18th Century William and MaryHEART AND CROWN DecoratedBannister Back armchair with a fully developed and scrolled carved modified CROWNcrest with the Best Cut Heart Element, a highly developed and turned flattened acorn finial, FOUR BOLDsplit and reeded banisters, a bottom crest, with double turned front stretchers, all in A NICE MELLOW EARLY 20TH CENTURY BLACKPAINTED surface.

THIS EXTREMELY RARE CHAIR IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE SALMON FAMILY OF CABINETMAKERS FROM STRATFORD, CT CIRCA 1740-1760. Similar examples are illustrated and researched in "Connecticut Furniture Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries", by Robert Trent. Other examples of these RARE Chairs can be found in the collections of the Connecticut Historical Society, The Wadsworth Atheneum, as well as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Metropolitan Museum, New York. You can also find a couple of illustrated examples of this rare form in the sale catalog of Christies sale in 1992 of the Lillian Blankley Cogan Collection.

A very rare chair with great bold turnings and form. Heart and Crown Bannister Back chairs were made between 1720-1770 in the Southwest Shoreline of Connecticut. This great chair has the distinctive turnings from the Stratford - Milford area. The Salmon family of turners are responsible for the majority of these rare chairs. This chair has all the best attributes of the form. It has nice scrolled arms with rare turned medial arms beneath. The front and sides stretches are well defined and match the medial arms. It has the distinctive bold capped acorn finials on the back posts and the deep channel cut flat bannisters.

THE CONDITION OF THIS CHAIR IS EXTREMELY FINE.

THE CREST IS ALL ORIGINAL AND STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL PINS. ALL FOUR BANNISTERS ARE ORIGINAL AND BREAK FREE. THE ARMS AND MEDIAL ARMS ARE ORIGINAL AS ARE ALL THE STRETCHERS. THE FEET ARE INTACT AND NEARLY FULL HEIGHT.

The repairs are as follows, the left finial has been repaired, it was broken and re-glued by the previous collectors. There is also an old crack in the left post above the seat. It is extremely strong and stable and this was in the chair when they purchased it from Cogan. (This is a fairly common issue with these chairs because of the very deep turnings). There are two old square nails in the posts to tighten the crest and a couple of old added nails at the joints to tighten. All these are extremely minor.

This is a very stable chair and was being used on a daily basis.

The surface is an old black paint from the turn of the century. The original rush seat was replaced about 60 years ago with another rush seat that is very stable and complete.

This great chair stands 47" tall.Seat height is 17 1/2" and it is 26" across the arms. These proportions are nearly identical with the documented examples of the other Salmon Heart and Crown Chairs in Museums.

THIS IS A VERY RARE AND IMPORTANT CHAIR.
