A FINE QUALITY 19th CENTURY VICTORIAN ROSEWOOD LAP DESK

Offered for sale is this beautiful fine quality 19th century Victorian rosewood veneered lap desk (on a solid mahogany carcass) with very decorative mother of pearl flora inlay to the top lid (see photos 2 & 7). The external of the box has rich coloured rosewood grain and super patina. The mother of pearl inlayed cartouche is inscribed ECC (see photo 2). The box has two opening lids, the one to rear reveals the compartments which has brass inlayed borders (see photo 3), and the other the reveal the writing slopes (see photos 2 & 3); one of the slopes opens up to reveal a further compartment for letters etc.

Internally the box is of fine quality having mahogany linings, with three lidded compartments where the tops have brass inlay boarders (see photo 6), a removable pen tray and 2 molded glass inkwells which are of the cork stopper type where the stoppers are missing. The writing slopes are lined in a dark blue valor which is a replacement.

I believe that this box is all original (except for the lining to the slopes) including the brass hinges and lock which is in working order with a key provided. Please see all the photographs in order to gain an appreciation of this lovely quality box.

The condition of the box is quite exceptional considering it\'s age having no major damage, previous restoration work, lose or missing veneer or cracking or missing mother of pearl inlay; there there are a few insignificant minor surface knocks due to age/use and a slight minor hairline shrinkage to the opening slope lid (see photo 3) to the right and left of the cartouche. Please see all the photographs for overall condition.
Measures 380mm wide x 250mm deep x 95mm high.
