An Early 19th C Meissen Figurine, Pan and Syrinx c. 1815

This is a wonderful early 19th century Meissen figurine depicting Pan, half-goat, half-man, and the god of Nature, attempting to seduce Syrinx, a nymph.

In Greek mythology, Syrinx fled Pan\'s advances, and begged her sister nymphs to hide her from her would-be suitor. They obliged by turning Syrinx into a reed. Desperate to find her, Pan chose seven or nine reeds and turned them into "Pan pipes", which he played in hopes of charming her back.

Here the two are seated on a stylized, white rococo knoll, ornamented with foliate sprigs and gilt on the raised, and incised areas of the base.

Both Pan and the object of his affections are wonderfully and naturalistically depicted, with great detailing in the hair, face, clothing, skin and gestures.

The condition of this figurine is exceptional for its age. It would make an extraordinary addition to a collection of Meissen porcelain or a great gift for a student of the Classics.

Marked: On the back of the figurine, near the base, with the blue underglaze Meissen mark in use around 1815, on the bottom, the impressed numbers 146.

Measures: Height: 4 1/2" Width: 4 1/2" Depth: 2 1/2" across at the centre.

Excellent condition: No chips, cracks or crazing on the figurine. One tiny, virtually invisible repair to the toes of the nymph\'s foot. Drying fracture in the potch on the base of the plinth (pictured).
