Islamic, Mughal Northern India -dating from the 18th century.
A Muslimaftaba hand washing water ewer.
Cast using the \'lost wax\' process, a heavy copper alloy (brass) vessel. The compressed baluster form rests on four integral pad type feet - a central plug to the base seals the vessel, (image 11). This type of closure typical of cast hollow-ware from northern Indian and Deccan.
The tapering spout is panel sided, hexagonal in section and incorporates a raised central embellishment. The scrolling handle is of highly stylised \'dragon\' form and incorporates the cover hinge fulcrum. The cover, an additional casting, is of campana form and incorporates a shaped central knop. A riveted copper pin locates the cover hinge lug within the corresponding fulcrum to the handle.
The surface is finely chiseled with repeating elements of floral embellishment - two raised tear drop form panels to the broad faces of the vessel are engraved with floral decoration.
Height - 11 5/16\" (287mm), Overall length - 11\", (279mm).
Weight - 2,122 grams

Condition - Good. The lower \'tail\' section the handle has at some time been lost - see image 12. (consistent with genuine age and usage). No cracks or dents - no repairs. Minor surface marks etc. consistent with age. Fine natural colour and patina.
