Malay brass-work, Sarawak or Brunei -dating from the late 19th century.
The \"Tawak-Tawak\" gong created as a complex \'lost wax\' copper alloy casting - tapering in profile and incorporating a large central convex boss. This example is complete with the original suspension chains and hooks - also of cast construction.
The gong face is cast with a pair of Sea Dragons - also a small crab, (image 3).
A most unusual cast \'butterfly\' forms the ornate central chain linkage. A pair of chains are incorporated at the butterfly\'s lower wing areas and extend to a pair of hooks, (the hooks engage within a pair of corresponding holes to the gong rim). The upper most supporting chain is mounted with a single suspension hook - the hook cast in the form of a Sea Dragon, (image 8).Overall diameter, (gong) - 10 3/4\" (247mm), Full suspended height - 32 1/2\", (825mm).
Weight - 2,286 grams.
Condition - Very Good. The usual minor and unique casting flaws, no repairs. Fine natural colour and patina.
