Japanese明治時代 Meijiperiod-dating from the second half of the 19th century.A large, heavy, Satsuma pottery bowl, resting on a collet form foot.
The broad baluster form is finished with fine polychrome and gilt embellishment - the decoration takes the form of figurative vignettes from Egyptian antiquity. One scene depicts four heavily armed warriors. The reverse depicts slaves moving deity figures on a small sled, whilst another pair of figures are shown with an attendant - see additional images above.
Finely applied gilt-work forms geometric bands of embellishment.
The shoulder incorporates a cartouche containing an arabic inscription - see image 11.
Image 12, details the maker\'s painted seal - The Shimizu family crest, below the Satsuma Yaki, (the last character in Satsuma abbreviated).Overall height - 5 3/8\" (137mm), max diameter - 8 1/2\" (216mm).
Weight - 1,613kg.
Condition - Very Good. The usually crazing to the cream ground - minor rubbing to the gilt rim. No cracks or chips and no restoration.
