A Fine Underglaze And Overglaze Enamelled Studio Porcelain Bottle Iris Vase
Yūgyokuén workshop, Katō Tomotarō (1851-1916), Meiji period, late 19th/early 20th century
stoutly potted white porcelain of compressed cylindrical form with an underglaze pale orange-brown rim, the sides finely painted in bright underglaze blue tones, translucent overglaze green enamel and partially amber enamel with flowering branches of iris in a pond with rippling waves rendered in sumihajiki, reserved on a hazy underglaze pale orange-brown and pale blue ground, an underglaze-blue yūgyokuén tōju séi (manufactured at the Yūgyokuén workshop) six-character mark to the base, some kiln-grit adhering to the thickly potted footring, some manufacturing imperfections to the glaze, partly soiled

The porcelain vase was manufactured at the Yūgyokuén workshop some time during the late Meiji period (1868-1912). This widely-renowned porcelain workshop is said to have been established in Koishikawa (Tōkyō) by the Séto-born potter Katō Tomotarō in 1883. The large underglaze decorated Yūgyokuén Studio porcelain vase (27.16 in. high) with a pair of carp is very well known to have won a honourable award at the Chicago Universal Exposition in 1893. The underglaze blue mark on the base is one of the variations adopted by his workshop. The two-character mark Tōju was his gō, the artist name of Katō Tomotarō. The number of existing pieces manufactured in the Yūgyokuén workshop is much smaller in comparison with that of the Makuzu-studio under Miyagawa Kōzan I (1842-1916) and other contemporary studio potters.

SHIPPING
All sale lots are shipped worldwide by EMS (International Postal Express Mail Service offered by postal-administration members of the Universal Postal Union) or private couriers in one business day (Japan standard time) on receipt of payment or cleared funds in full. All merchandise is required to be despatched to the payer\'s address confirmed by PayPal, should payment is made by this on-line intermediary firm. Merchandise can also be handed over to a purchaser in person domestically. Delivery time depends on the speed of clearance of goods at Customs, which substantially varies from country to country.

Estimated international shipping based on the total packed weight and destination zones are quoted just below the descriptive information on each item. International shipping quoted is what a shipper charges to the seller in Japan. The actual total EMS postage or private courier charges in JPY and weight of a shipment (grammes) are filled in on a shipment package.

Under the current regulation, shipping is now required to be quoted in selling goods. Since all goods are despatched from Japan where shipping is obviously charged to the seller in JPY, the latest PayPal\'s official exchange rates when an item is listed to sale must unavoidably be adopted, although the exchange rate adopted may change by the time when an invoice will have been e-mailed to the successful buyer(s). Estimated international shipping in US dollar is based on conversion from JPY to US dollar with the latest exchange rate quoted on the PayPal website and rounded to the nearest US dollar, as many overseas buyers choose PayPal as the principal method of method. Combined shipment can be arranged for multiple purchases to minimise international shipping providing that all goods are packed in one available box.

INSURANCE
Insurance will be based on the total value of a shipment. A single shipment valued below 20,000 JPY (based on the latest foreign currency exchange rate) is included in the shipping quoted. Insurance for a shipment valued above this threshold will be added to an invoice as seller\'s charges.

IMPORTATION OF MERCHANDISE
Unless otherwise merchandise is shipped domestically, Custom duties based on the declared Customs value of merchandise may be payable. These extra charges are not included in the total price in an invoice. Custom duties rates vary from country to country and all prospective buyers are advised to know what import duties will be with the Customs office of the country to which merchandise is imported. We cannot be held liable for these charges as they are beyond our control. No import duties are payable for "antiques" in USA.

All sale lots offered by the seller are subject to laws governing exports from Japan. A single shipment valued above 200,000 JPY requires an Export Permit at Customs in Japan. All necessary permits in exporting goods from Japan are undertaken for successful buyers.
