RARERED RIDING HOOD umbrella stand 19th century cast ironEuropean antique from the U.K. or from Germany. R 19750 cast into the body main and also underneath the tray. Appropriate wear from use and age to paint surface throughout - see images for a complete look at condition - ask questions. These are rarely seen and desirable to collectors of 19th century Victorian furnishings. From the popular imagination, authored by the Brothers Grimm, a fairy tale iron umbrella stand. Nearly 55 pounds, 38.5 inches tall by 21 inches wide with removable tray. This one with original paint - 2 others found on the internet - (and there are only 3-4 others total to be found, have been described as sandblasted to bare metal and sealed. This one has no rust.SEE:Cast IronUmbrella StandOfRed Riding Hood$5,500.00-1stdibs.It consists of 4 separate components bolted together with the fifth being the removable tray with handle. See: Collectors Pounce on Red Riding Hood an article by the Kovels about the 2003 California sale featuring this item as the PREMIER ITEM. That one sold for $4950, the TOP MONEY item of 200 pieces offered. This one has two notable condition problems which I will leave to the buyer. 1) A piece of iron is missing at the back, from the bottom component stage right, mostly hidden by the tray and barely visible when displayed, but it is a significant loss:SEE LAST IMAGE. 2) The center standard has a break near the middle. It is a perfect break and detectable only by the crack line. This center front standard is completely detachable and may be isolated on a workbench to effect an easier repair. I have been advised to use JB Weld on that piece for a permanent structural repair but this is such an outstanding antique I will leave it to the buyer and their archivist to resolve. SEE 3rd to last and 2nd to last images for a clear description of this clean break on this center front standard which is the smallest and lightest of any of the parts. Little Red Riding Hood is the heroine of a story by the Brothers Grimm, written in 1812. Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Snow White were other stories they wrote. Little Red Riding Hood has been popular with collectors. Nineteenth century Staffordshire potters in England made many figurines showing Red Riding Hood holding a basket or talking to the wolf. Small wax figures of the girl in a red cape were made as decorations for nurseries. Plates picturing the events of the story were also made. The Red Riding Hood cookie jar and kitchen sets by Hull Pottery, made from 1943 to 1957, are popular 20th century collectibles. Dolls, toys and many types of dishes were also made. More than 200 Red Riding Hood pieces, including a rare umbrella stand, were offered at an sale in California in September. The iron stand with both the girl and the wolf is colored brown, green and, of course, red. The name \"Red Riding Hood\" is impressed on the front in English. It is marked with only a number on the back, but possibly it was made in Germany in the late 19th century for the American or English market. It was saleed for $4,950. (12 years ago, 2003)
