A RARE SET OF FOUR SILVER STRAWBERRY or SALAD DISHES, LONDON, 1835 by ROBERT GARRARD II

A very rare set of four silver strawberry or salad dishes London 1835 by Robert Gerrard II.

Each scalloped circular body with wavy rim, the centre engraved with an armorial for Viscount Ashbrook. (see photo)

With motto below \'Mens conscia recti\' which translates as \'A mind conscious of rectitude\'.

Hallmarked for London, 1835 by the expert silversmith Robert Garrard II. There is a retailers mark of \'MAKEPEACE LONDON\' to each dish.

Strawberry dishes were originally developed in the late 17th Century and were used primarily for strawberries. However, their usage evolved and they became used as dessert dishes. Then when eating salads became the fashion their use developed once more to accommodate the fashion. By the time these particular dishes were commissioned, they would have been used for all these purposes.

It is highly unusual to find a set of four, highly collectable and sort-after, strawberry or salad dishes together as a set. Rarer still that they were made the illustrious Robert Gerrard II - one of the greatest silversmiths of the time who became the royal silversmith. The Victoria & Albert museum has several pieces of his work from the same period with the \'Makepeace\' retailer mark.

These dishes are in wonderful condition with minor scratching to the dish through use. The hallmarks are clear, with only the makers mark on each being partially rubbed.

The armorial is for Viscount Ashbrook. The dishes would have been ordered by Lord Henry JeffreyFlower (1776-1847).

During the period these wonderful dishes were commissioned,Lord Flower was a Captain in the 58th Regiment of Foot; a Lord of theBedchamber to King Edward IV 1832-37.
