ASUPERBENGLISH SILVERGOBLET/CHALICE, HUNT AND ROSKELL, LONDON, 1873

This superbVictorian silver gobletwas made in London in 1873by the firm of Hunt andRoskelland bears full and clear hallmarks to the underside of the foot, where it is also marked with the nameof‘J.W.BENSON, LONDON’.

The quality of this goblet is fantastic! The gilding to the interior is sumptuous and the silver is of very good gauge. The design is restrained and refined and time it was made.Only the acanthus leaves curling over theknopornament the plain silver stemflaringover the plain foot. The ornamentation to the bowl of the goblet is confined to the lower partonly, where six repeating petal-shaped panels ofstylisedfleur delysand lilieshave been arrangedin anendless knotandinterspersed with asmallfleur delysand heart design, between the tops of the petals. The background is finely punched.

The prestigious firm of Hunt andRoskellevolved fromthe most famous firm in the history of English silver,Rundell, Bridge andRundell.John Samuel Hunt was the nephew of PaulStorr, the most eminent silversmith employed byRundell’s, and Hunt worked withStorras a chaser.Storrwent into partnershipwith John Hunt, and they calledtheirnew firmStorrand Mortimer. AfterStorr’sretirement in 1838, the name was changed to Mortimer and Hunt. They tradedunder this nameuntil 1843, when Mortimer retired. John Samuel Hunt then set up a new firm in partnership with his son, John Hunt, and RobertRoskell, trading under the name ofHunt andRoskell.

Hunt andRoskellbecamethe favourite British silversmiths of the Imperial Russian Court. In addition to placing their own orders with the firm, members ofthe Russian Imperial family also received many gifts from the British Royal family, purchased from Hunt andRoskell,to mark important events and occasions.

J W Bensonwas founded in 1847 by James William Benson and SamuelSuckleyBenson. The firm had a dual aim;to becomeone of Victorian London’s most prestigious retail jewellers and, quite remarkably, to manufacture its own watch movements. It obtainedprestigious premises at 43 Cornhill and 33LudgateHill, continuing to trade from the latter only after 1855 when the original partnership was dissolved and James William Benson took over the running of the business entirely. Eventually, Benson’s took over the firm of Hunt andRoskelland benefitting from its high end clientele, acquired premises at 25 Bond Street.
