A Silver-Gilt And Plique-A-Jour Enamel Beaker And Bowl:
$7950.00

Considered a technique \"tour de force\" in enameling, this most beautiful and most difficult of enameling techniques is sometimes referred to as \"backless cloisonne\". The manufacturing process is very scrupulous and labour-consuming. The making of plique-a-jour involves the removal of the support structure used during firing - the tricky step that results in a very high breakage rate. In the end product enamel and wires support themselves and light shines through like in a stained-glass window.
In the center of the beaker on the two diametrically opposite sites is renowned Russian double-headed eagle that is also depicted in the middle of the bowl. Both beaker and bowl are richly decorated in floral and ornamental embellishments.
There are two hallmarks on the beaker and the bowl: one is the maker\'s mark of famous Russian silversmith Pavel Ovchinnikov and the other one (kokoshnik) is the mark of the Moscow region assayer Ivan Lebedkin (84 zolotniks for silver quality, 1899-1908 period)
The height of the beaker 5.25\"The diameter of the bowl 6.75\"
A similar beaker without a bowl by the same silversmith was sold by Christie\'s in 2008 (see the last picture)
