$404.09

Here for your consideration are a fabulous, rarepair of very fine, Arts & Crafts, candlesticks/chambersticks designed by Dr Christopher Dresser in 1885 and manufactured by Benham & Froud.
Considering these fabulous candlesticks are old they\'re in goodcondition. The turned ebonised wooden handles are nice and clean with no splits, and the candlesticks do stand straight, a couple of small copper base dents, commensurate with age, but overall the candlesticks have some beautifulage related patination and theworkmanship is quite exquisite.

Dr Christopher Dresser (1834-1904)

Adesigner and design theorist, now widely known as one of the first and most important, independent, designers and was a pivotal figure in the Aesthetic Movement, and a major contributor to the allied Anglo-Japanese or Modern English style. Among the first independent industrial designers, Dr Christopher Dresser championed design reform in19th century Britainwhile embracing modern manufacturingin the development of wallpapers, textiles, ceramics, glass, furniture and metalwork. Towards the end of Dr Christopher Dresser’s life, a tributedescribed him as “perhaps the greatest of commercial designers, imposing his fantasy and invention upon the ordinary output of British industry.”

Benham and Froud ...

In 1785 John Kepp set up as a coppersmith and brazier in Chandos Street, London. Around 1818 the company was in the names of Richard and Edward Kepp. In 1821 they made the replacement orb and cross for St Paul\'s Cathedral, 23ft high and weighing seven tons, it could be seen from their shop.

In 1855 the company was taken over by Herbert Augustus Benham and Joseph Froud becoming known as Benham and Froud. They described themselves as general metal workers, art metal workers and lamp manufacturers. The orb and cross trademark was then introduced from 1855 to 1924. Interestingly the orb also represents an inverted \'ankh\' the greek symbol for copper. In 1906 the company was reformed as Herbert Benham & Co in Marlborough Mews, Great Marlborough Street, London W, moving to Ramillies Place, London in 1920 before finally closing in 1924.
