Description:

AN EXTREMELY RARE 18TH CENTURY BANNISTER BACK ARMCHAIR FROM THE PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE AREA WITH THE BEST CARVED \"FISH TAIL\" TOP CREST AND FIVE BOLD SPLIT BANNISTERS WITH GREAT BOLD TURNINGS AND THE BEST SCROLLED ARMS WITH VERY RARE DOUBLE CUT CARVED HANDS ALL IN AN OLD SURFACE WITH TRACES OF THE ORIGINAL RED PAINT THROUGHOUT.

Maple and Ash, Portsmouth, NH area, Circa 1725-1760.

An extremely bold 18th Century American Bannister Back Armchair with a fully developed and scrolled carved \"FISH TAIL\" Top crest with FIVE BOLD splint and conforming banisters, topped with a nice turned ball finial and a boldly carved bottom crest rail with all original stretchers in a nice old color with traces of an old and possibly original red paint throughout.
THE SWEEPING ARMS END IN THE BEST CARVED HAND HOLDS.

This chair is structurally in NEAR PERFECT condition. ALL THE COMPONENTS ARE ORIGINAL. EVEN THE ORIGINAL RUSH SEAT SURVIVES, (there is some old repairs and re-weaving added, but 80% is original). There is an old repair to the top of the right side of the crest made in the 19th century with an old square head nail. It is tight and strong.

 

There is a nearly identical example in the collection of Historic Deerfield, and is included and illustrated in the book, \"The Furniture of Historic Deerfield\", by Fales. There is also a well documented example, (armchair) illustrated in \"300 Years of American Seating\", by Patricia Kane, see last photo.

This great chair stands 44\" tall. The seat height is a full 16 1/2\".

Typical wear associated with the age of the item. The chair at one time was fitted for casters, now removed.
