Description:

FRESH FROM AN OLD NEW YORK STATE COLLECTION OF EARLY PILGRIM AND WILLIAM AND MARY FURNITURE.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ROBUST TURNED WILLIAM AND MARY CANDLESTANDS FROM THE WESTERN PART OF CONNECTICUT OR VERY EasterN HUDSON RIVER VALLY OF NEW YORK FROM THE LAST PART OF THE 17TH OR BEGINNING OF THE 18TH CENTURY THAT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL GRUNGY RED PAINTED SURFACE AND ITS EARLY 19TH CENTURY VARNISH. WHAT IS MORE RARE IS THE FACT THAT IT IS A TILT TOP AS WELL.

A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF A PILGRIM AND WILLIAM AND MARY TRANSITIONAL COUNTRY TILT TOP CANDLESTAND. WE HAVE NEVER SEEN AN EARLIER EXAMPLE OF A TILT TOP TABLE.

A MUSEUM QUALITY Pilgrim - William and Mary Cherry and Gum Wood Candlestand from the Western part of Connecticut or Eastern Hudson River Valley of New York, Circa 1690-1720 with A GREAT TWO BOARD CHERRY TOP; HAVING THE BEST BOLD AND ROBUST DEEP TURNED TRUMPET VASE AND RING TURNED SHAFT, BLIND MORTISED AND PEGGED SAWN HIGHLY DECORATIVE SCROLLED LEGS AND A WONDERFUL DROP ACORN FINIAL all in THE MOST AMAZING ORIGINAL RED PAINTED SURFACE STILL RETAINING MOST OF ITS EARLY 19TH CENTURY VARNISH AS WELL. Connecticut or New York, Circa 1690-1710 in Cherry and Gum Wood.

This stand exhibits the early applied drop finial below the deeply turned shaft which is indicative of an early transitional Pilgrim Period stand or table. This is the robust Trumpet and Ring turnings you find on other pilgrim and William pieces. The shape of the sawn legs and pad feet are also of the early period. The legs are blind dovetailed and pegged into the shaft, a feature that was replaced in the Early Queen Anne period.

What is extremely rare and desirable is the very early use of a tilting top. It still retains its original hand carved cleats as well as its original top block. rather than the later way of pegging the block to the cleat with wooden dowels, this piece uses hand wrought iron pieces. This is certainly a very early and naive way of attaching the piece, but it worked and it still survives!!!

THE SURFACE IS THE VERY BEST. THE ORIGINAL DARK RED PAINT IS STILL PRESENT AND COVERED WITH A VERY EARLY 19TH CENTURY VARNISH. WHERE THE PAINT IS NOT VARNISHED, mostly the underside of the top, IT IS DRY WITH GREAT OXIDATION. IT IS COMPLETELY ORIGINAL AND INTACT AND HAS THE GREATEST PATINA.

All the original pegs holding the legs are intact. The Two board Cherry Top is all original and very tight. The original hand carved cleats are intact as well. There is on later replaced screw in one of the cleats and the present iron latch to hold the top shut dates to the latter part of the 19th century. You can seen evidence of its earlier latch. The Top block also at one time had an old age crack where the shaft entered it and an old crack to the top of the shaft as well.  There are a couple of later 19th century nails added for strength and support and also an extra wooded wedge. These would considered very minor usage repairs. There is also a very old and very minor loss to the inside of one of the legs, (see photos).

THIS IS A VERY RARE STAND AND WOULD FIT WELL INTO AN EARLY PILGRIM COLLECTION.

The stand is 24\" tall and 36\" when open. The top is about 25\"round with great 1\" shrinkage.

Typical wear associated with the age of the item.
