A Very Fine Rare William IV Silver Tea Service, York 1833.A very fine and extremely rare William IV silver tea service of compressed circular form.Consisting of a teapot, cream jug and sugar bowl.
The teapot has a shaped silver handle with shaped thumbpiece and heat spacers. Decorative embossing to the upper side of the spout. The body with two bands of ribbed decoration. The lid with concealed hinge and conforming circular finial. The sugar basin has shaped scroll handles and a ribbed central girdle. The cream jug is similarly shaped. Both have gilded interiors.
All three pieces marked for York 1833 by James Barber, George Cattle and William North who worked together from 1825 - 1835. Each piece is also crested with a horned goat holding a flower in its mouth. The teapot is part marked to both the inner lid, the handle and to the retaining nut for the finial.
All three pieces are in superb condition.
The teapot is in very good order. Fine thick gauge silver throughout. The handle is firm the lid sits well and the hinge is good. The inside is clean.
The cream jug is in very good order and the gilding is very good.
The sugar basin is also in superb order and again the gilding is very good. Both of equally thick gauge silver as the teapot.
The hallmarks are somewhat rubbed to each piece in different ways. The makers\' mark is clear on all three pieces as are the duty mark, the Leopard\'s head and the Lion Passant. The date mark is clear on two of the pieces and rubbed on the third. The York town mark is clear on the sugar basin and rubbed to the other two.
This really is exceptional in every way, as these York services are increasingly rare.
All in absolutely original condition with no damage, no repairs and no distortion to any of the pieces. The silver is of a wonderful lustre and patina.
