Maori, New Zealand -dating from the mid 20th century.
Hand carved and shaped from a single section of native hard-wood timber.
Of traditional shape and form, this example incorporates a central tiki figure - a second tiki mask forms the grip base, or pommel. Both tiki incorporate inset sections of shaped and polished paua shell - forming eyes to the face masks.
The grip is pierced and incorporates a looped and tied natural fibre wrist cord.
Overall length - 15 3/4\" (400mm).
Weight - 290 grams

Condition - Very Good. Surface marks and abrasions, consistent with some genuine age. No repairs - natural colour and patina.
