Description

A very rare, and desirable, ASCR (All Souls Common Room) black glass wine bottle, and now you have a chance to still be the winner, of this \'seal #12\' ASCR, and it is PERFECT.We acquired this great \'seal 12\', the only one of the 20 different All Sous College seals where the A.S.C.R. is in \"Italics\", from non other than Ms Fay Banks herself prior to her writing her excellent monograph, on All Souls Bottles. This seal appears in the A.S.C.R.: The Wine Bottles of All Souls College 1750-1850 [Vidonia Press, 2002] that she painstakingly scoured all the known records, of the \'Dreaming Spires of Oxford\', and assembled this book for future collectors. I had a chance to help by proofreading, and adding a few thoughts page iii, under Acknowledgements, and on page 28 one of my bottles, from our collection being noted.

(NOTE) The winner of this bottle that I obtained from Ms Banks, then added to my collection, will also include one of the first, and only remaining copies, of this great little book. Also make note that six years later she brought us another great work, in two volumes, \'250 Years of British Antique Wine Bottles\', and I am privileged to have, in my possession a signed copy, #5 of 50.

The stunning bottle offered today has a long, \'drawn\' neck, with a flattened string rim set immediately under the tooled, conical rim (see pictures). The beautifully cut seal, of the so-called \'Italic\' type, has exaggerated strokes, on the ends of the letters, giving it a rather archaic, late-seventeenth century feel. For comparison, and illustration of a seal from an \'Italic\' seal All Souls bottle is provided by Fay Banks on Plate 21, page 63 (seal #12). The bottle has a kick-up base, with a sand pontil mark. There is a photograph, of the \"Italic\" seal bottle, in Ms Banks\" book on page 63, and a description on page 40. She gives the date as circa 1789, and the supplier as Turner of Stourbridge. The bottle is in excellent condition without chips or cracks It is in excellent condition, with full surface gloss, and no chips, or cracks. It still contains some port residue. The kick-up is deep, with a nice pontil mark.
This bottle is in cellar found condition - bright and clean. It is absolutely excellent with no chips, cracks, or restoration at all - a very desirable bottle for addition to any serious collection, of English black glass wine bottle, or your specialist A.S.C.R.dealer\'s inventor. This bottle is approximately 11 1/8 inches, 29 cm tall.
