This is a remarkable original etching by British artist William Wyllie (1851-1931), titled \"HMS Renown\". The image size is 4 7/8 x 12 7/8 inches, published c. 1920, pencil signed. Wyllie was a well known marine painter and printmaker in early 20th century London. He studied at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and at the age of 15 began his studies at the Royal Academy. At the age of 18, Wyllie won the Turner Gold Medal for his painting \"Dawn After A Storm\". He went on to have a long artistic career, specializing in paintings and etchings of the sea and the city of London. In this image, Wyllie uses incredibly delicate lines and subtle plate tone to create an atmospheric scene of the warship \" HMS Renown\" leaving Portsmouth harbor accompanied by a squadron of biplanes. This image is in good condition overall, although there is a distinct line of toning around the image from an old window mat and a few small spots of foxing, as is common in etchings of this age. These could easily be taken care of by a competent restorer, but really the image looks quite presentable as is, and is ready to be framed. Buyer pays shipping.
