I have decided to sell a magnificent early 18th century needle worked Kerchief or Fichu.A Fichu was a triangular scarf that was worn around a ladies neck. It would compliment her garment. This one I have for sale is worked on the finest of chocolate coloured silk, so fine it is almost like a single layer of a tissue. The border is profusely worked with exotic blooms, buds & leaves, the stems embroidered in gold metallic threads. The edges of the large flowers worked in silver metallic threads. Other colours used are pink, blue & various shades of green. The needlework is exquisite.Normally these fichu\'s have lost their entire triangular shape whereby only the border itself remains so it rare to find one complete albeit the top has perished in parts. The third flower along from the right at the bottomhas separated from the silk backing. The border has a double layer of silk. Some metallic gold silk threads are loose on the edging. For a piece of early 18th century costume to have been worn & survived all these years is nothing short of a miracle!
A similar kerchief can be seenin the V&A museum collections
