AFRICAN TRIBAL ART YORUBA CHIEFTAIN CROWN WITH 9 BEADWORK BIRDS 19 1/2\" TALL

Intricate beadwork of an African Chieftain\'s Crown prepared by hand with many steps to complete. It also has much symbolism associated with it. Each of the birds is approximately 6\" long with the top bird being 7\". There are strings of beads (veil) hanging around the bottom of the crown. It is lined with a striped fabric of many colors. Condition is very good. These crowns are handmade in a somewhat \'primitive\' fashion, so it is notperfect, but it certainly has character and elegance, and makes a BIG visual impact! Traditionally, Yoruba crowns were worn by the king, or Oba, in public ceremonies. They were embellished with symbolic designs. Beads were signs of wealth and status. The inclusion of birds on many of the crowns refers to the spirit world and the king\'s ability to mediate between the realms of human beings and spirits, the secular world and the spiritual one. Birds are also said to represent female power, in its nurturing (motherly) and destructive (witch-like) aspects. It is commonly accepted that the oba (king) cannot rule without the cooperation and support of the women in his village.
