A modern day archaeological enigma, the VINCA are one of the world\'s oldest Neolithic cultures, smelting copper and building cities in central Europe around 5,500 BC, a good couple of thousand years before the ancient Sumerians.

Discovered in 1908, the VINCA flourished in the area of modern day Bosnia, Serbia, Romania and Macedonia. Despite remarkably advanced urban settlements, they were apparently a peaceful society with no evidence of war, weapons or defences found in any of the 147 townships so far discovered.

They left behind a well-developed pictographic "proto-script" which, although still undeciphered, many scholars believe to be the earliest form of writing ever found. The strangely dressed alien-looking statues of their unknown gods have provoked much speculation about their mysterious origins.
