This sale is for a very unique and rare item thought to have been destroyed during the Shoa or Holocaust. Here you have before you a true \"brand plucked from thefire\", a Jewishmarriage contract (Ketuba) saved from the hell of World War 2, just 4 years before the Nazi beasts invaded Holland and destroyed 500 years of Jewish existence in that country. This particular kesubah was made on \"29days in the month ofAv(August) in the year 5695 (1935 of the Common Error) of Creation here in Amsterdam how Rebbi Israelson ofRebbiTzviakaHenry.. takes the womanRivkadaughter of RebbeYitzchakto be his lawfully wedded Jewish wife according to the Laws of Moses and Israel...\". Signed by the witnessesYehudah ben Chayim Hakohen Geltzahler and Moshe Naftali Ben Menachem Landau

On thereverse sideof this document is a signature with latin characters probably referring to the Latin name of the new couples family name. The name of the couple wasDe Vries.

As you can see, an item such as this is quite rare and seldom put up for sale. It is highly uncommon to find a Museum quality piece such as this relating to the pre-Holocaust period. The Jews of Amsterdam - Holland were practically all but destroyed during the Shoa, their possessions looted, burned and stolen. Somehow this document remained in order to show future generations just how Jews lived....and died.

The style of this Ketuba is also unique in the sense that the printers utilized motifs (such as the angels, pillars, vase etc) from the Medieval & Renaissance perioddocuments and illuminated books. To find such a piece in such good condition is extremely rare. Judaica sales have had similar Ketubot go for severalhundred dollars!

Condition: Very good some staining on the bottom and reverse side.

MEASUREMENTS: 8.5 X 14.5 INCHES = 21.5 X34cm.

PS I could not fit the Ketuba on the scanner screen so I did the top and bottom in 2 scans. The Ketuba is complete though.
