ANCIENT LEATHER COSTREL BOTTELL JACK EUROPEAN ORIGIN EARLY TURNED WOOD STOPPER:
$449.99

This is an ancient estate found 17th 18th century leather costrel or bottell also sometimes called a leather jack. I am not certain of this ones exact European origin. These leather vessels can date back to medieval times. This one was found in a Connecticut estate of an early family. It had been stored in the attic for years. The piece remains in excellent condition. It retains what appears to be its original wood stopper which looks to have be made using a combination of a draw knife and turning lathe. There is a wrought iron hook that is forged exactly like an antique iron skewer, but bent into a hook form. The underside of the bottle is recessed and there are three layers of stitching. The top of the leather bottle has two necks. One functions as a drinking spout and the other a small air vent. The overall height not including the stopper is approx. 12\". In researching, an unsubstantiated reference is made to one similar to this as being of Spanish origin. It is a very interesting and ancient looking piece!
