Partly Printed DS: \"Andrew Jackson\" as President, 1p, 15x9½. On vellum. Washington, 1830 November 15. Countersigned: \"Elijah Hayward\" as Commissioner of the General Land Office. Grant of 320 acres to Francis Pete who had originally settled on part of Arkansas territory which had been given to the Cherokee Indians. In part: \"Know Ye, That, in pursuance of the provisions of the 8th Section of the Act of Congress, approved on the 24th day of May, 1828, entitled \'An Act...for making donations of land to certain persons in Arkansas Territory,\' and of the other Acts making donations to settlers in the said Territory, there has been deposited in the General Land Office a Certificate of the Register of the Land Office at Batesville in the said Territory....\" The 8th Section of the Act provides \"That each head of a family...actually settled on that part of the territory of Arkansas, which, by the first article of the treaty between the United States and the Cherokee Indians west of the Mississippi...has ceased to be a part of said territory, who shall remove from such settlement...shall be authorized to enter with the proper register of the land office in Arkansas a quantity not exceeding two quarter sections of land, on any of the public lands in that territory, the sale of which is authorized by law...and upon presenting the certificate...a patent shall be issued to such settler, or to his or their heirs, for the lands so entered, as a donation from the United States, as an indemnity for the improvements and losses of such settler under the aforesaid treaty.\" On May 6, 1828, a treaty with the Cherokee Indians had been signed in Washington securing \"to the Cherokee nation of Indians...a permanent home, and which shall, under the most solemn guarantee of the United States, be, and remain, theirs forever....\" The first article of the treaty defined the western border of the Arkansas territory displacing American settlers, one of whom was Francis Pete. A document relating to one of the many treaties signed with Native American Indians and then broken by the U.S. government. Folds. Vertical fold touches the \"d\" in Andrew. Nailhead-size stain at blank upper right. Fine 2-inch seal and 6-inch signature.
