GOOD LETTER about marching, upcoming battles to take onthe rebels....reference to another Fredricksburg coming up.He had left the church\'s sabbath school to volunteer for3 years and thinks he made a mistake, and angered God.cover as pictured. letter very fine, folded.writing a bit lightbut quite readable. written in black ink.
a portion transcribed below..(page 2) \".........We have been under marching orders some time......some think we are going to Alexandria some to the battle fieldI think as near as I can find out we are going to try the rebels againon the other side of the river again I guess if we do we shall haveanother Frederircksburg one thing is surtain whether we gain theday or not there will be a great meney lives lost and I have got tostand my chance with the rest + God only knows I hope if it mylot to go we shall meet where there will be no war nor parting. Miles when do you think this war will end I have made up my mindI have got to stay my 3 years it is roll call so good night Miles
Jan19th(page 3) .....got sickly this morning I have a pain in my head andback and feel very unwell. I hope this will find you and Eleanoraenjoying good health. I think there is a great battle comeing offsoon and prehaps before this reaches you I shall be laying deadon the battle field and if it is so I hope I shall be better off for inthis world there is nothing but pain and sorrow for in the midstof life is death Miles I fear I am getting far from the lord far fromthe path of duty......convinsed that I did wrong in leaving thesabbath school and in comeing into the armey I pray that Godwill forgive me for doing so for if I did wrong and spare my lifeto return again unto the church.......wish you could see the grubwe have to eat and the small quantitybut I will try and do the best I can and trust in the lord...write soonfrom your Brother...\"
