Niagara Books is proud to offer this full-leather edition ofRobert Freke Gould’sHistory of Freemasonry, complete in four volumes, published c.1898 by John C. Yorston & Co. of Philadelphia, PA.
This New Edition, Revised does not have a publication date; however, my researchdates it from 1898.

DescriptionThis four-volume, full-leather-bound set looks to have been recased in the late 1990s or early 2000s. Each volume feature brown leather with gold gilt lettering and Masonic Symbol (Compass and Square), and four raised ribs on each spine. Each 4to volume features many steel engravings separated from the text block with tissue paper. In addition, each volume contains multiple illustrations. This is a complete set in four volumes.
These volumes are in very good condition. The casing is sturdy and all text block is both present and secure. Pages are generally clean and free from markings; however the pages are sunned slightly but generally lacking any foxing. There are minor open or closed tears to some of the tissue paper separators between the frontispiece and title page. The leather binding is beautiful although corners are bumped and rubbed slightly.Please note, I cannot guarantee that this book does not smell musty or that it comes from a smoke/pet free home.
About the bookThe 1898 New Edition, Revised appears to be rare, although I was able to find several earlier and many later editions. The only similar volumes for sale that I have found includesingle volumes from the set ranging from $165up in listing price.
This set provides a wonderful reference set regarding the history of freemasonry from its beginnings through the end of the 19th century. These volumes are generously illustrated with engravings and illustrations.
About the AuthorRobert Frekes Gould was born in 1836, and died March 26, 1915. He entered the English army at the age of eighteen, becoming a lieutenant in the same year, and serving with distinction in North China in 1869. On his return to England he studied law and became a barrister in 1868.
As a Free Mason, he was initiated at Ramsgate in the Royal Navy Lodge, No. 429, and was Master of the Inhabitants Lodge at Gibraltar, also of the Meridian Lodge, No. 743, a Military Lodge attached to his regiment. Afterward he held the Chair of the Moira, Quatuor Coronati and Jerusalem Lodges.
In 1880 he was appointed Senior Grand Deacon of England. He had been a constant writer in the Masonic press since 1858; in 1879 he publishedThe Four Old LodgesandThe Atholl Lodges, and in 1899 a book onMilitary Lodges. (Source:[link removed by ])
